Civilisations Brussels Art Fair – Spring Edition

The Civilisations Brussels Art Fair celebrates its 8th edition from June 3 to 7, 2026, in the Sablon district. The fair convenes local and international galleries to showcase ancient to contemporary art from Asia, Africa, Oceania, and America.
For the African section, Diane Hall Artifacts will present a tapestry by the Congolese artist Marcel Gotène (1939–2013). Born in Brazzaville, he began his training at the École de peinture de Poto‑Poto before moving to France in the late 1960s, where he studied at the Collège technique d’arts graphiques in Paris and then at the École nationale d’art décoratif d’Aubusson, immersing himself in tapestry under Jean Lurçat, a leading figure in the contemporary tapestry revival. One of the pioneers of modern Congolese painting and the first painter‑weaver, Gotène combined painting, screen‑printing and tapestry in vivid, surreal compositions that reflect both Congolese imagery and modernist influences. In 2014, his work was featured in the exhibition D’une rive à l’autre at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
